25th November 2015
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as Acting Interim Principal of the College. Unfortunately, Mrs. Gillies unexpectedly required an operation from which she is still recovering; I am sure that you will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery. I am delighted to be given this opportunity to work with staff and other colleagues at the College.
In September, the College had a full Section 5 Ofsted inspection. The report will be available for you to read on Thursday 26th November. You can access the report on the College website or by following this link
I would like to assure you that since September the staff and students at the college have been working hard to bring about improvements. In Year 11 we have introduced Period 6 to help students boost their achievement and progress and to ensure that they are properly prepared for exams. Thank you for your support as parents in encouraging your children to attend these classes. Please continue to encourage your child to attend these lessons each week:
Monday: Maths 2.45pm – 3.45pm
Tuesday: English 2.45pm – 3.45pm
Thursday: Citizenship 2.45pm—3.45pm
Friday: BTEC 1.35pm – 2.35pm
Thank you to everyone for their hard work on attendance; we have an overall attendance of 95.4% so far this academic year - the best in over 10 years and with almost 500 of our students with 100% attendance. Fridays continue to be an issue. Please ensure that your child attends every day of the week. Students who attend 100% of the time gain on average one grade higher in all their exams.
At Laisterdyke College we believe it is important to raise aspirations of all our students and to work closely with the local community. As a result we have been involved in a number of projects, including:
Health Ambassadors - in collaboration with The Thornbury Centre
Lord Mayor Awards - in collaboration with the Bradford Youth Service
Crime Prevention - in collaboration with West Yorkshire Police
In addition, as part of their coursework, our Citizenship students are supporting a local food bank by collecting donations of tinned and dried food. Please try to give generously to this collection which will go to help others in the area who are in need.
Life continues to be busy for our students who have been learning about the world beyond college.
Mr. Beaumont and the Business Studies teachers took 49 students to learn about the global business of Manchester United whilst Mrs. Mearns took 15 of our Year 12 students to an NHS Careers convention at Valley Parade. The College continues to develop links with local universities, with Post 16 students visiting both Bradford and Huddersfield Universities. In addition, Miss Akudi and two of our Y9 students visited Ypres in Belgium and the Somme battlefield sites as part of a larger party of Bradford students commemorating the First World War Centenary.
Our students have been active in Drama, with two visits to the Alhambra Theatre this term. In September Mr.Bere accompanied a group of year eight, nine and ten students to a Shakespeare workshop with local primary schools. In a return visit on the 19th of November eighteen of our students took part in a performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The actors all took to their roles with energy and gusto, showing a great command of Shakespeare's language. This was an unforgettable night for audience and actors alike. Congratulations to the students for their hard work and commitment and for producing such an excellent show.
Congratulations also go to forty five of our Post 16 students who have received their Progression Module Awards.
Dates for your diary: please remember that Year 8 Parents' Consultation will take place on Wednesday 2nd December, 3.30 p.m. onwards. Students will have an appointment letter to allow you to make an appointment at a convenient time. Wednesday 9th December is the Post 16 Open Evening for Year 11 students considering courses for next year.
I would like to take this time to assure you that we are working hard to ensure that all our students achieve their best and continue to benefit from being part of the Laisterdyke family. If you have any concerns or questions about any aspect of school life, please contact Gillian Midgley, my PA (01274 203956).
